The Slave Lake Adult Education Committe is part of the Community Learning Network. The Community Learning Network (CLN) is a provincial not-for-profit organizat ion that provides leadership, resources, and connections to Alberta's 80 Community Adult Learning Councils (CALCs), their staff and boards of directors. The CLN works with Alberta Advanced Education and Technology to enable Councils 5/5. Because of the important role played by community learning providers, Premier Ed Stelmach asked Canadian Minister of Advanced Education and Technology to increase support for community education and literacy programs. Community Adult Learning Councils and other community providers of adult literacy and family literacy programming are primarily voluntary sector grassroots organizations.

The participants in the study included 43 coordinators of Alberta Community Adult Learning Councils who voluntarily participated in an online community over one year. In Alberta 83 Community Adult Learning Councils (formerly called Further Education Councils) coordinate community-based adult education at the local level. We offer Essential Skills assessments and training for the workplace and daily living. We also have a variety of individual and small group learning opportunities for adults at all levels of literacy.

The Community Learning Network provides leadership, resources, and connections to over 80 Community Adult Learning Councils (CALCs) across Alberta. Community Adult Learning Councils address the part-time, non-credit learning needs of adults within specified geographic boundaries. Currently 80 in number, these unique councils. Through the Community Adult Learning Program, Alberta Advanced Education provides funding to support the delivery of part-time, non-formal adult learning opportunities in local communities.
