Just south of Hillcrest sits Balboa Park, the largest urban cultural park in North America and a hub for recreation, arts and culture, and community gatherings. The park is home to 16 museums and performing arts venues, ornate Spanish-Renaissance architecture, 1,200 acres of beautiful gardens and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. The Balboa Park Activity Center is a multi-purpose gymnasium built to accommodate badminton, table tennis, volleyball and other events, including regional, state and national tournaments. The Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair and a variety of tournaments for people with disabilities are also held at the Balboa Park Activity Center.

Many of the museums along Balboa Park's Prado are housed in magnificent Spanish Colonial Revival buildings, originally constructed for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition.
